“Determination will give you focus, but experience will make you stronger!” – Futurist  Jim Carroll

Wow, was this really just 2 weeks ago in Nashville?

I was up early again and out for a swim at 545 with my coffee, watching as the sun came up over the mountains here in St. Lucia. It’s an interesting time to be in the water at an all inclusive resort – it’s only me and the beach guys getting things set up for the day, while the rest of the resort slumbers away.

I already had this picture in mind while floating around, and was trying to find the story to tell around it. And of course, it had to be the story I told on stage. I was with a global medical company at an annual sales meeting, and there is a significant new business initiative and opportunity underway.

I spun my keynote into that theme, and talked of the need for them to simply try the new ideas being put on the table – not necessarily to have a huge home run, but more important to build up the experience with the new ideas, concepts and opportunities.

This has long been a focus of mine – I call it ‘experiential capital’. The more you try something new, the more experience you build up. The more experience you have, the stronger you are!

This goes the way you live your personal life too. The more you develop experience in situations that are new and unique, the better positioned you are to deal with them again in the future.

It’s like you are building up the thickness and intensity of your daily battle armour!

Experience is an asset – and you need to invest in it, work with it, understand it, nurture it – and most important of all, never shy away or hide from it! Bring it on instead!
