“It is better to believe in a dream based on hope than to be discouraged by a nightmare that is rooted in hate!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

When people come to define themselves by the hatred in their hearts, you need to check the humanity in your soul to find a foundation for hope.

On this Martin Luther King Day 2022, democracies worldwide find themselves in greater peril than ever before as the cauldron of racist hate boils into broader societal acceptance. And quietly, I despair, like many others around the world, as we watch a once-revered nation, the United States of America, veer dangerously close towards the edge of the death of its democracy, and with that, a return to its the darkest past.

It’s not my job as a futurist to lecture – it is to talk about what comes next. Even so, one-day last year, in a particularly sour mood, I captured all of my negative predictions into a blog post. You can read it here at https://badthings.jimcarroll.com. How bad could it get? Pretty bad. I dare you to read it, and disagree with some of my predictions.

The Dark Underside of a Usually Optimistic Future: How Bad Could Things Get? Pretty Bad!

And yet, I always battle to find optimism in despair, positivity when surrounded by negativity, hope when witnessing hate. To that end, there is no better guidance than one of the greatest orators of all time, Martin Luther King.

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.

So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.

The future?

It is better to have a dream of hope than a nightmare of hate. On this MLK Day 2022, the battle to find your love in the midst of all the hate.

It’s nourishment for your spiritual soul.
