“Your plan for your future needs to be something much more than ¯\_(ツ)_/¯!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Somewhere along the way, ‘whatever‘ became the foundation of our future, “someday” the basis for our planning, and “it is what it is” the bedrock of our action. The result is that we’ve become indifferent to our internal attitude, immune to our negative feelings, and end up living with a veneer of often manufactured acceptance that the way things are will just stay that way.
It’s a tough time to be an optimist!
But we can’t just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯! our way into the future. Relentless change demands that we think, requires that we act, encourages us to do. And that means battling through to the reserves of our internal belief system, and calling out injustice when we see it, challenging incompetence when we encounter it, and battling idiocy when we witness it.
This doesn’t require us to go full postal on Twitter – indeed, online rage is often a sign of change failure. But it does require us to speak up when we can, to get involved when we should, to express our opinions when. they should be aired.
It’s a dangerous thing when we let ourselves fall into a mindset in which we just accept the status quo and throw away our ideals because we are too tired to fight for them, too weary to stand up for them, and too browbeaten to express them.
We all need to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯! on occasion, but it should be not much more than a simple momentary gesture than an entire basis of living!
